Never saw it coming

Sometimes a picture can spark an entire afternoon's meditation:

This picture just about sums up my past week.  A sudden descent into a place I didn't expect, never saw coming.  Ah well, that's one of the reasons I'm so fond of the "Life's a journey" statement.

Life is also a "participation sport".  To actively engage, and be open to, what we find along the way.  I don't always "actively engage", no, many times things or people do not capture enough of my attention to drag me outside of myself, and I am no doubt psychologically and intellectually poorer because of it.

Then there are the times when I deliberately "tune out".  I don't want people or events dragging me out of "me".  Sometimes I just want to get lost in that wonderful and chaotic "world" of my thoughts and ruminations.

There is a quote of E.E. Cummings that I am repeatedly drawn to:

"We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit."

As I looked back on this week it was that E.E. Cummings quote that sprang to mind.  And so, as I look up from that sudden and unexpected precipice I fell over on my "journey" I cannot help but be thankful that I understand those words, not only for what they mean for me, but for what they may mean for someone else through me… if I can only manage to remain engaged.
